Why CHO (Control Head Only) for ice fishing?
Most ice anglers run the included ICE-specific 2D transducer (XI 14 HW or similar) for traditional ice sonar, plus MEGA Live 2 for forward imaging. They don't need a Side Imaging transducer because there's no boat-deployed setup. CHO is the right choice for ice fishing.
Can I use this in open water too?
Yes, but you'll need a separate Side Imaging transducer (XM 9 HW MSI T or similar) for SI/DI/2D in open water. Many anglers run this same head unit summer and winter, swapping transducers seasonally.
How does MEGA Live 2 work under the ice?
The MEGA Live 2 transducer is mounted in the hole or on a separate ice-specific mount that lets you scan in any direction (forward, sideways, or downward). The forward-facing mode shows fish approaching your jig from up to 100 feet away under the ice.
What's the battery situation?
The ICE bundle includes a 12V lithium battery and shuttle case. Ice X9 runs efficiently to maximize battery life through a full day of ice fishing. MEGA Live 2 adds power draw, plan to swap to a fresh battery for full-day trips.
