Why Step Up to a 16"?
Three concrete reasons to choose the 16x3 over a 12" X3:
- Massive screen real estate at the helm. A 16" diagonal is significantly larger than a 12" β at arm's length on a center console or flybridge, the difference is dramatic. Charts are easier to read while underway, sonar shows more history, multi-pane layouts have actual breathing room.
- Better single-display setups. If you can only fit ONE chartplotter on your helm, a 16" gives you enough screen to run chart + sonar + radar simultaneously without cramping. A 12" forces compromises.
- Looks the part. On larger center consoles, sportfishers, and yachts, a 12" chartplotter can look undersized at the helm. A 16" matches the scale of the boat.
When to skip the 16" and stay at 12": Smaller boats where dash space is limited, or when you'd rather buy two 12" units (one chartplotter + one MFD) than one 16". Two screens give you redundancy and flexibility a single 16" can't.
Where This Fits in the GPSMAP Lineup
- GPSMAP 7"/9"/12" X3 ($1099-$2999) β Same X3 platform in smaller sizes
- GPSMAP 1543xsv ultrawide ($4499) β 15" ultrawide form factor
- GPSMAP 16x3 (this product, $4899-$5099) β 16" standard format, X3 platform
- GPSMAP 8610/8612 ($2599-$4099) β 10"/12" Full HD MFDs with HDMI output
- GPSMAP 8616/8617/8624 ($5599-$12299) β 16"-24" premium MFDs for glass-bridge installations
What's the Difference Between Models?
- Last digit "3" = X3 generation (touchscreen, BlueNet, multi-band GNSS)
- "23" middle = Worldwide basemap (1623)
- "43" middle = Preloaded Garmin Navionics+ U.S. and Canada Inland + Coastal (1643)
- xsv suffix = Built-in 1kW CHIRP + UHD ClearVu + UHD SideVu sonar processing
- No xsv = Chartplotter only (no sonar processing)
This is the 1623xsv β built-in sonar processing with worldwide basemap only. Right choice if you fish internationally, plan to add Garmin Navionics+ / Vision+ on SD card for specific regions, or already have chart cards from a previous Garmin unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between 1623 and 1643?
Identical hardware. The 1623 ships with a worldwide basemap only. The 1643 includes preloaded Garmin Navionics+ for U.S. and Canada inland and coastal waters (plus Bahamas, Bermuda, Baja California, Alaska, Hawaii). Choose 1643 if you fish North America and want detailed charts out of the box.
What's the difference between 1643 and 1643xsv?
The xsv has built-in sonar processing (1kW CHIRP + UHD ClearVu + UHD SideVu). The non-xsv is chartplotter-only. If you'll connect a transducer to this MFD, get the xsv. If you'll only use networked sonar (sonar shared from another GPSMAP, GSD 25 black box, or LiveScope), the non-xsv saves money.
How does this compare to the 1543xsv ultrawide?
Different form factors. The 1543xsv is ultrawide β wider but shorter β designed for chart + sonar + radar in one continuous view. The 16x3 is standard format β taller and squarer β better for general navigation and detailed chart viewing. The 16x3 also has full BlueNet ports built in (the 1543xsv requires a BlueNet 30 Gateway). For most installations, the 16x3 is more versatile; for active multi-source helm monitoring, the 1543xsv shines.
How does this compare to the 8616xsv?
The 8616xsv is in the GPSMAP 8000 series β Garmin's premium MFD line with Full HD displays and HDMI output. It costs $500+ more than the 1623xsv. Differences: 8616 has Full HD resolution and HDMI output for sharing to external displays. 16x3 has the modern X3 interface and slim profile. For most boaters, the 1623xsv/1643xsv covers the use case at a lower price.
What transducer should I get?
Compatible with most Garmin 12-pin transducers (GT54UHD-TM, GT56UHD-TM, GT51M-TH) and 8-pin transducers via adapter. For UHD scanning at moderate depth, GT54/GT56. For offshore thru-hull deep-water work, GT51M-TH. Pair with a GSD 25 sounder module for dual-channel CHIRP up to 5,000 ft.
Does this support LiveScope?
Yes β full Panoptix lineup including LVS12 (plug directly without a black box), LVS32, LVS34 (LiveScope Plus), and LVS62 (LiveScope XR). Add a GLS 10 sonar black box and the appropriate transducer.
Can I run radar AND sonar at the same time?
Yes β multiple Marine Network ports plus BlueNet support let you connect radar, sonar modules, IP cameras, and additional MFDs without bottlenecks. Add a Garmin GMS 10 port expander to scale further.
What's BlueNet?
Garmin's next-generation Marine Network β significantly faster (1 Gbps) than the legacy Marine Network. Backward compatible with older Marine Network cables and accessories via the BlueNet 30 Gateway. Faster networking matters when you're running multiple LiveScope feeds, IP cameras, and radar simultaneously.
What's J1939?
Engine data interface protocol used by many newer commercial and high-end recreational engines (Volvo Penta, Cummins, Caterpillar). Native J1939 means engine data displays directly without a NMEA 2000 converter.
What's included in the box?
Chartplotter, power/data cable, mounting hardware, protective sun cover, hardware, and documentation. Transducer NOT included β even xsv models have built-in sonar processing but require a separately-purchased transducer.
What's the warranty?
1-year limited manufacturer warranty from Garmin.
Financing & Warranty
1-year limited manufacturer warranty from Garmin. 0% financing available β no credit needed on qualifying purchases. Military and First Responders are encouraged to use credentials in the cart section before checking out.
