Minn Kota Ulterra with AutoStow and AutoDeploy

The Minn Kota Ulterra is the Terrova plus AutoStow and AutoDeploy. Push a button on the i-Pilot remote and the trolling motor automatically stows or deploys without manual cable pulling. This is significant for solo anglers and older anglers who find manual stow/deploy difficult. Five configurations all include MEGA Down Imaging or Dual Spectrum CHIRP built-in sonar. Above Terrova in the Minn Kota line, below Quest series.

Ulterra exists for one specific reason: hands-free stow and deploy. If you fish solo, have shoulder issues, or just hate the mechanical pull required to stow a Terrova or Ultrex, Ulterra is worth the $200-$400 premium. For typical anglers comfortable with manual stow/deploy, Terrova or Ultrex saves money with the same i-Pilot capabilities. All Ulterra variants include built-in sonar (no no-sonar variant exists). The MEGA Down Imaging variants ($3,200-$3,400) deliver the premium imaging integration; the Dual Spectrum CHIRP variants ($3,000-$3,300) use standard sonar at $200-$300 less.

Minn Kota line context: Endura/Riptide Transom (transom-mount, hand-tiller, $350-$1,250). Edge (entry bow-mount cable-steer, $400-$800). Pontoon (pontoon-specific, $1,000-$1,150). Powerdrive (mid-tier electric-steer with optional CHIRP/OBN, $830-$1,750). Maxxum/Riptide Maxxum (cable-steer mid-tier, $900-$1,400). Fortrex/Riptide Fortrex (cable-steer premium, $1,600-$1,900). Riptide Powerdrive (saltwater electric-steer with i-Pilot, $1,660-$2,200). Riptide Kayak Terrova (saltwater kayak with i-Pilot, $1,900). Terrova/Riptide Terrova (electric-steer with i-Pilot GPS, $1,750-$4,000). Ulterra (Terrova plus AutoStow/AutoDeploy, $3,000-$3,400). Ultrex (cable-steer with Spot-Lock, $2,700-$3,600). Quest series (premium current generation: Terrova Quest, Ultrex Quest, Ulterra Quest, Riptide Instinct Quest, $3,700-$6,400).

What is i-Pilot? Minn Kota's integrated GPS and remote control system. i-Pilot includes (1) Spot-Lock GPS anchor that holds position over fish without anchor, (2) AutoPilot heading hold that maintains course while you fish, (3) waypoint navigation with route storage, and (4) speed control. Operated via Wireless Remote, Micro Remote, or CoPilot Remote depending on the motor. i-Pilot Link is the integration with compatible Humminbird HELIX G4N, XPLORE, and APEX fishfinders, sharing waypoints and providing on-screen control.

What is MEGA Down Imaging? Humminbird's premium down imaging technology built into the trolling motor lower unit. Compared to standard Dual Spectrum CHIRP, MEGA Down Imaging provides significantly higher detail on structure, cover, and fish at down-looking angles. The transducer fires through the trolling motor, eliminating the need for a separate transom-mount transducer. Compatible with Humminbird HELIX G4N, XPLORE, and APEX fishfinders. For Lowrance ecosystems, MEGA Down Imaging is not relevant; pick a no-sonar variant and run a Lowrance Active Imaging or ActiveTarget setup separately.

Configuration Guide

The Ulterra comes in five configurations across three axes: shaft length, voltage, and built-in sonar (Dual Spectrum CHIRP or MEGA Down Imaging). All variants include AutoStow/AutoDeploy and i-Pilot GPS:

  • 45 inch shaft, 24V 80 lb thrust, Dual Spectrum CHIRP ($3,000). Entry Ulterra. Right for bass boats 17-19 ft.
  • 60 inch shaft, 24V 80 lb thrust, Dual Spectrum CHIRP ($3,100). Standard 60 inch shaft with CHIRP at 24V.
  • 60 inch shaft, 24V 80 lb thrust, MEGA Down Imaging ($3,200). 60 inch shaft at 24V with premium MEGA DI sonar.
  • 60 inch shaft, 36V 112 lb thrust, Dual Spectrum CHIRP ($3,300). 36V upgrade with CHIRP. Three batteries required.
  • 60 inch shaft, 36V 112 lb thrust, MEGA Down Imaging ($3,400). Top-tier Ulterra. 36V plus premium MEGA DI sonar. Right for tournament bass boats 21-22 ft.

AutoStow vs manual stow: Push the AutoStow button on the i-Pilot remote and the Ulterra hydraulically stows itself in approximately 8 seconds. Same for AutoDeploy. Manual stow on Terrova or Ultrex requires pulling a release strap and pushing the motor up by hand (typically 5-10 seconds for an experienced angler). For solo anglers, fishing in waves, or anglers with shoulder issues, AutoStow is significant value.

Who This Is For

This trolling motor is best for solo anglers wanting hands-free stow and deploy, older anglers with shoulder limitations, anglers fishing windy conditions where mechanical stow is risky, tournament anglers wanting fast deployment, and Humminbird ecosystem users wanting MEGA Down Imaging integration with hands-free deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is i-Pilot?

Minn Kota's integrated GPS and remote control system, included on Terrova, Riptide Terrova, Ulterra, Quest variants, and Ultrex (with separate Spot-Lock remote). Features include Spot-Lock GPS anchor, AutoPilot heading hold, waypoint navigation, and speed control. Operated via wireless remote.

i-Pilot vs i-Pilot Link?

i-Pilot is the standalone Minn Kota system with its own remote. i-Pilot Link adds integration with compatible Humminbird fishfinders (HELIX G4N, XPLORE, APEX), letting you control trolling motor functions from the fishfinder screen, share waypoints, and display Spot-Lock coordinates on your fishfinder. Most current i-Pilot motors include i-Pilot Link compatibility.

What is Spot-Lock?

GPS anchor hold. Press Spot-Lock on the remote and the trolling motor automatically holds your boat in position over fish, structure, or cover. Compensates for wind and current. Replaces traditional anchoring for many bass and crappie applications. Game-changing feature once you fish with it.

What is AutoPilot?

Heading hold. Set a course and AutoPilot maintains the heading while you fish. Useful for trolling, parallel-structure fishing, or navigating to a waypoint. Compensates for wind drift.

What is MEGA Down Imaging in the trolling motor?

Humminbird's premium down imaging technology built into the trolling motor lower unit. Compared to standard Dual Spectrum CHIRP, MEGA DI provides higher detail on structure, cover, and fish at down-looking angles. Available on select Terrova, Ulterra, and Ultrex variants. Compatible with Humminbird HELIX G4N, XPLORE, and APEX fishfinders. For Lowrance or Garmin ecosystems, MEGA DI is not relevant - pick a no-sonar variant and run a separate transducer.

AutoStow/AutoDeploy on Ulterra explained?

Push a button on the i-Pilot remote and the Ulterra hydraulically stows or deploys itself in approximately 8 seconds. No manual cable pull. Manual stow on Terrova or Ultrex requires pulling a release strap and pushing the motor up by hand. For solo anglers, anglers with shoulder limitations, or anglers fishing windy conditions, AutoStow is significant value. The hydraulic system adds complexity and may require service over years.

Why pick Ultrex (cable-steer) over Terrova (electric-steer)?

Ultrex uses traditional cable-steer foot pedal for steering. Tournament bass anglers running aggressive position changes prefer cable-steer for the immediate mechanical feedback (zero lag). Terrova electric-steer has a slight processing delay. Ultrex still provides Spot-Lock and CoPilot via the i-Pilot Link remote, so you don't lose GPS features. Choice between Ultrex and Terrova is preference: cable-steer for tournament responsiveness, electric-steer for smoother general use.

How do I choose shaft length and voltage?

Shaft: measure waterline to bow deck top, add 16-18 inches. 16-17 ft uses 36-45 inch, 18-20 ft uses 45-52 inch, 20-22 ft uses 52-60 inch, 22+ ft uses 60-72 inch (Riptide Terrova has 87 inch for sportfisher applications). Voltage: 12V/55 lb for boats <18 ft, 24V/80 lb for 18-21 ft, 36V/112 lb for 21+ ft or heavy current/wind. Higher voltage means more thrust and longer runtime per amp-hour.

Saltwater vs freshwater models?

Riptide series uses stainless hardware and sealed electronics for inshore saltwater. Standard freshwater models corrode in saltwater within months. For inshore saltwater (bays, sounds, estuaries) Riptide is required. For offshore, even Riptide is not appropriate. 2-year saltwater warranty.

Lithium vs lead-acid batteries?

Lithium is 60-70% lighter and provides consistent voltage throughout discharge (no thrust drop-off as battery drains). Cost 2-3x more upfront but typically last 5-10x longer. For tournament anglers and serious bass anglers, lithium is increasingly standard. For 36V applications, three lithium batteries can save 100+ pounds total weight. Match battery group size to motor voltage requirements.

Do I need professional installation?

Bow-mount installation is typically DIY for handy anglers (2-4 hours including mounting plate, battery wiring, breaker). For OBN integration with Humminbird via NMEA 2000, complexity increases. Professional install ($200-$500) appropriate for first-time installers, multi-battery setups, or boats requiring deck modifications. Carolina Sportsman Outfitters coordinates installer referrals.
