Screen sizes are 9, 10, 12 and 16 inch. The 10, 12 and 16 add large programmable keys, and the 16 is the only model in the line running Full HD 1920 x 1080, which is the real reason to step up to it. The sonar platform, networking and ActiveTarget 2 support are identical across all four sizes, so a bigger screen buys you room for more panels, not a sharper picture.

Q: What is the difference between Active Imaging HD and Active Imaging 3-in-1?
A: Active Imaging HD runs up to 1.2 MHz for higher-definition SideScan and DownScan. The Active Imaging 3-in-1 is the earlier transducer, running 455/800 kHz. Both give you CHIRP, SideScan and DownScan; the HD version is sharper and holds detail at longer range.

Q: Is the 16 inch sharper than the 12?
A: Yes, and it is the only one that is. The 16 runs Full HD 1920 x 1080 while the 9, 10 and 12 share the same lower resolution. The sonar platform, networking and ActiveTarget 2 support are identical on all four. Buy the 16 for Full HD and room to run four panels; buy the 12 if two or three panels is your normal.

Q: How is HDS PRO different from Elite FS?
A: HDS PRO adds the SolarMAX HD screen, radar and autopilot support, SiriusXM, larger 12 and 16 inch sizes, and native Active Imaging HD. It is also the only Lowrance line that runs two ActiveTarget 2 systems at once. Elite FS covers ActiveTarget 2 and Active Imaging on a simpler platform for less money.

Q: Do I need the transducer option?
A: Only if you do not already have one. The no-transducer options are display only, so choose one of those if you are running a thru-hull, reusing a transducer, or feeding the display from a networked sonar module. For a fresh install, pick a package with the transducer included.

Q: Can I add live sonar later?
A: Yes. Every HDS PRO is ActiveTarget 2 ready out of the box. Add the ActiveTarget 2 system when you are ready, and on HDS PRO you can run a second system for Forward plus Back and Scout Wide views at the same time.
