Both models share the same build — multi-band GPS and multi-GNSS positioning that locks in under canopy and in canyons, preloaded TopoActive maps, downloadable satellite imagery, 64 GB of storage, ABC sensors (altimeter, barometer, 3-axis compass), an LED flashlight, an emergency siren, and up to 145 hours of battery life. It's built to MIL-STD-810 and rated IP67. The difference between the two comes down to one question: do you need to communicate off the grid? The H1i Plus adds inReach Plus satellite technology — two-way messaging, interactive SOS, LiveTrack, and a first for Garmin handhelds: a built-in camera and mic to send photos and voice memos over satellite.

What's the difference between the H1 and H1i Plus? The H1i Plus ($999.99) adds inReach Plus satellite communication — two-way texting, interactive SOS, LiveTrack, and photo/voice messaging via satellite. The H1 ($699.99) is navigation-only with the same display, maps, sensors and durability. The $300 difference buys off-grid communication.
Does the H1i Plus really have a camera? Yes — it's the first Garmin handheld with a built-in camera. You can take geotagged photos and send them over satellite to other inReach or Garmin Messenger contacts, and record voice memos too. The H1 has no camera.
Do I need a subscription? Only for the H1i Plus's inReach features, which require an active satellite plan. Navigation, maps and sensors work on both units with no subscription.
How long does the battery last? Up to 145 hours in GPS mode on both. The H1i Plus reaches up to ~845 hours in Expedition mode with 30-minute tracking. Charges via USB-C.
