Why a fixed-mount VHF?
Fixed-mount VHF radios are permanently installed on the boat, wired to 12V power and an external antenna. The advantages over handheld VHF: 1) Much better range (external antenna delivers 12-25+ miles vs handheld 3-7 miles). 2) Higher transmit power (25W vs 5-6W handheld). 3) Always powered by boat (no battery to die). 4) Better audio quality. Fixed-mount is the primary marine radio for serious boating.

What antenna do I need?
Marine VHF antenna is sold separately. Typical recreational boaters use a 4-8 ft fiberglass antenna (Shakespeare 5101 is a common choice). The antenna is the single biggest factor in achieving full VHF range. Cable should be RG-58 minimum, RG-8 for longer runs (over 20 ft).

What's Class D DSC?
Digital Selective Calling. Press a single button to broadcast your boat's identity (MMSI number) and GPS position on Channel 70 to the Coast Guard and other DSC-equipped vessels. The most important safety feature of modern VHF. Requires NMEA 0183 GPS input and an MMSI number (free registration at boatus.com or USCG).

FCC licensing:
Recreational US boating does NOT require FCC license for VHF use. Commercial vessels and operations require FCC Marine Radio Operator license. International voyaging requires Ship Station License. Most CSO customers are recreational, no FCC license needed.

M330 vs M330G?
The M330 (this product) has Class D DSC but requires external GPS input via NMEA. The M330G includes built-in GPS so it can send your position automatically without external wiring. The M330 is the value pick if your chartplotter is already on the NMEA network.

VHF Channel 16 is the international distress and calling channel. Monitor when underway. Use for emergencies (Mayday, Pan-Pan, Securite calls). Switch to working channels for routine communications. Channel 16 monitoring is the foundation of marine safety.
