What's a locator call?
Calls used NOT to call turkeys to you, but to LOCATE turkeys at distance. Barred owl hoots at dawn naturally trigger gobblers to "shock gobble", they can't help themselves. You hear the shock gobble and now know exactly where the bird is roosted.
Pre-dawn scouting workflow:
1) Sneak into your hunting area before first light. 2) Hoot the owl call (good owl impression). 3) Listen for shock gobble responses. 4) Move to within 100-200 yards of the gobbling bird. 5) Set up before fly-down. 6) Begin hen calling at first light.
Other locator calls:
Crow calls (mid-day shock gobbles), coyote howls (any-time shock gobbles), peacock calls (rarely used). Owl call is the standard pre-dawn locator.
Owl impression matters:
