Frequently Asked Questions
Why Float'n Flash matters:
Standard handheld VHFs sink if dropped overboard, you lose the radio AND the ability to call for help in the same incident. The M25 floats AND flashes, so you can recover it AND see where it is. For backup safety equipment in a life raft or ditch bag, this feature is essential.
What's the actual range?
5W handheld VHFs typically reach 3-5 miles boat-to-boat in good conditions, up to 5-7 miles boat-to-shore or boat-to-Coast-Guard tower. Range depends heavily on antenna height (yours and the receiver's). Handheld VHFs cannot match the range of fixed-mount (25W) radios with elevated 4-8 ft antennas.
USB charging, what works?
The M25 charges via Micro-B USB at 5V / 1A max. Standard phone chargers, USB battery banks, USB car/cigarette lighter adapters, and laptop USB ports all work. The supplied BC-217SA AC adapter charges in about 3 hours. Carry a USB battery bank for multi-day trips.
IC-M25 vs IC-M37, which to pick?
M25: 5W, 11-hour battery, 7.8 oz, IPX7, USB Micro-B charging, single internal battery. IC-M37: 6W (50% more power = longer range), 12+ hour battery, larger keys, IP57, removable battery (BP-296), AAA backup battery case (BP-297) included. Both float and flash. M25 is the lightweight value pick. M37 is the heavier-duty primary radio with longer range and removable batteries.
FCC licensing:
Recreational US boating does NOT require FCC license for VHF use. Commercial use requires FCC Marine Radio Operator license. Most users are recreational.
Best applications:
Kayak / canoe / SUP marine use. Dinghy / tender from larger boat. Life raft / emergency safety equipment. Backup for boats with fixed-mount VHF. Single-radio solution for small boats. Walking the dock to communicate with boat.
Channel 16 critical reminder:
VHF Channel 16 is the international distress and calling channel. Monitor when underway. Use for emergencies (Mayday, Pan-Pan, Securite calls). Switch to working channels for routine communications.
